Since their inception in 1995, the South Australian Training Awards have become the showcase for vocational education and training by recognising an rewarding students and enterprises that are outstanding in their training achievements.

The awards winners have been announced by the Minister for Employment, Traning and Further Education, Stephanie Key.

"Through the Training Awards we can recognise the contribution of students, businesses, training providers and schools to providing better skills for our workforce and meet the challenges of the future," Ms Key said.

"Vocational education and training (VET) is one of the major investments underpinning the South Australian economy. It provides a skills base to attract new investment and to build our existing industries and enterprises.

"It is a pathway to employment and study for many young people and provides opportunities for all individuals to reach their full potential and enrich their lives."

In South Australia, the number of students enrolled in a VET course has grown by more than half over the decade to 2000. In 2003 there were about 125,000 VET students in South Australia, about 13% of adult South Australian. Of these 32,000 were apprentices and trainees."

Student winners are automatic finalists at the Australian Traning Awards to be held in Melvourne on 18 November 2004. The enterprise award winners will become South Australia's nominees for the Australian awards in their category.
