Media Release: Lights Out with Linux
January 08, 2004
Imagine it's a cold and frosty night. You're lying in your warm bed
feeling nice and cosy. You stick your toe out and quickly pull it
back in again, feeling snug and sheltered from the cold. And then,
you see it -- you've left the kitchen light on!
Bed bug, Geoffrey Bennett, was determined not to be disturbed from his
haven again. Using a Linux-based application, he reprogrammed all of
his home lighting and security to be controlled by his Linux-based
computer. He can now turn off all of his household lights via one
light switch at his bedside.
Mr Bennett, who is a Senior Systems Engineer at leading IT company,
NetCraft Australia, will be just one of the interesting speakers at
the upcoming Linux conference, Linux.Conf.Au.2004.
He is also the brainchild behind NetCraft's Converse Voice over IP Application
Suite, which enables companies to operate their telephone system
using the internet, providing substantial savings and greater
flexibility.
NetCraft Australia has partnered with CISCO and Adelaide-based IAGU
Networks in releasing a versatile Linux-based, voice-over IP package
with Cisco IP telephony hardware, IAGU's SIP Server and NetCraft's
Converse Media Applications.
"The Converse applications have been developed to meet the needs of
Australian business and offer a lower total cost of ownership suitable
for businesses with ten to hundreds of users.
"Through application development, innovative partners such as
NetCraft
expand the scope and reach of Cisco's IP telephony into the commercial
marketplace," said Cisco's Channel Manager, Bruce Munro.
The conference is being held in Adelaide at the Adelaide University
from Monday 12 January to Saturday 17 January 2004.
